In 1937 Billy Gladstone patented a mechanism for tuning drums that employed the use of a special key that allowed for the top and bottom heads to be tuned individually, or at the same time—all from the top of the drum. This brilliant mechanism saved players time and the hassle of flipping the drum upside-down or reaching awkwardly underneath the drum to tune the snare side head. Gladstone also created unique and elegant throw off and tone control designs. Very few of these original drums have survived.

After Gladstone's death the design survived for many years, faithfully reproduced by Arnie Lang, with a deeply respectful attention to quality and detail and an expansion of shell materials and sizes.

This snare, built in 1997, is a Lang Percussion 5x14" 8-ply shell, with an outer ply of gorgeous birdseye maple, eight lugs, die-cast hoops, and steel snare wires. In great working order, with moderate pitting and a few areas of flaking on the chrome.
